How Will Quantum Change the “Future” of Public Sculpture?

Reflecting the London Sculpture Week Symposium, I write about how digital-quantum augmented outdoor sculpture may evoke new types of collective behaviour between people and the environment.

After taking part in the London Sculpture Week Symposium, I began thinking about how quantum thinking and future quantum technologies could radically change public sculpture.
 
For me, it’s exciting how quantum really highlights that nothing truly exists outside of relations.
 
So how might outdoor sculpture be created relation-first through the collective intelligence of the public and the environment working together?
 
I also love how quantum physics shows that nothing is permanent and everything is always in flux –  and that time is non-linear, with different temporalities existing simultaneously.
 
How might outdoor sculpture embody an ephemerality where the past, present and future coalesce into a single moment before dissolving again, and then reemerging as a new set of possibilities?
 
I’d love to keep working in the public realm, thinking about how I can use otherworldly quantum tools to literally rip holes in this reality to transport the public into other dimensions.
