The ‘Quantum Hybrids’ are a series of watercolour paintings of creatures manipulated by Heaney’s self-written quantum code and printed on transparent acrylic. The creatures are inspired by Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights, occupying a liminal space between heaven and hell, human and non-human. An amalgamation of elements – wings, tentacles, limbs – are melded together by the fluidity and transparency of watercolour, and united again in each work’s individual title. Each creature is then fragmented, layered, and recomposed by Heaney’s quantum code before being printed on to a transparent base. Reacting to their environment through their transparency and reflectiveness, the unfixed nature of these hybrids reveal the fluid and ambiguous inner workings of quantum computers.
The ‘Quantum Hybrids’ are the original illustrations from Heaney’s immersive installation Ent-.
