Three Resonances Between Glass and Quantum Physics

and it oozed out the machine, 2022. Hard-sculpted glass, 27x12x25.5cm.
  • Glass is the mirror opposite of a quantum particle: when it’s hot, it becomes a liquid, molten shape, shifting, almost slime-like. On the other hand, when temperatures are colder than deep outer space, individual particles become wave-like, fluid, merging, shape shifting.

  • Glass slows light down through the process of refraction. Quantum particles are capable of freezing light, pausing light’s motion and then letting it go again, which in science is known as a quantum light switch.

  • And finally, agency: when working with glass the process can be random, unpredictable and is very organic. You never really know how the glass is going to react to the environment or to the movement. Likewise quantum particles are shapeshifting but even more strongly – their properties literally come into being through entanglements with the rest of the environment.
