How Might Non-binary Quantum Physics Help Us Live in These Polarising Times?

Still from Please Don’t Cry, Libby Heaney, 2023.
You may have heard of quantum superposition: the ability for a material entity like an atom to be in multiple different contradictory states at the same time.

Lots of my quantum artworks follow superposition and hold multiple seemingly contradictory “truths” at once – grief AND hope; destruction AND creation; human, organic AND machine.

While we are not atoms, how can we still embrace quantum thinking and feeling in our daily lives by sitting with paradox and holding multiple emotions or realities to be true simultaneously?

Since Trump’s election I know lots of you have been feeling despair. I am feeling that too.

But this week through journaling, meditating and other practices I’ve been trying to feel despair AND hope, agency AND apathy all at once.

Becoming quantum is difficult, as I tend to attach stories to an emotion, collapsing the complexity to one strong feeling and narrative; but by quieting the mind, I noticed there is space for ‘superpositions’ of emotions to emerge.
