Eat My Multiverse, 2025 – ongoing,  performance with live projected quantum multiverse and sound, 30min

Eat My Multiverse is a live performance work that unfolds the self as quantum: plural, relational and sensorially entangled across inner and outer worlds and bodies. Drawing on Libby Heaney’s wider practice exploring quantum materiality, consciousness and shared ontological fields, the piece brings together quantum computing, virtual environments, voice, movement and embodied ritual to open experiential encounters with multiplicity. Natural imagery, memory and emotion circulate through the work as generative forces, allowing quantum phenomena to be felt as lived conditions rather than abstract concepts.

Eat My Multiverse invites audiences to sense themselves as entangled within wider human, technological, and ecological fields, cultivating forms of perception that soften polarised thinking and renew felt connection with nature.

The first iteration of Eat My Multiverse was commissioned by the Museum of the Moving Image, New York, as part of the Reframe programme in 2025. For MoMI’s Redstone Theater, Heaney used IBM quantum computers to generate a real time multiverse that she entered during the performance via live webcam feed, merging her physical presence with a computationally produced environment.

“Artist Libby Heaney deploys a live virtual environment to challenge sanitized narratives that obscure the magical and queer aspects of quantum phenomena. The piece is drawn from Heaney’s own memories and associated emotions, exploring quantum as a metaphor for self. For MoMI’s monumental Redstone Theater screen, Heaney has used IBM’s quantum computers to create a real-time multiverse that she will also enter as she performs through her webcam feed. The performance invites a reconsideration of the concessions raised among the fundamental poetics of science, human existence, and market forces.”

Since this initial presentation, Eat My Multiverse has continued to evolve across contexts and temporalities. Each iteration forms a distinct configuration shaped by site, technology and audience relation, reflecting Heaney’s ongoing exploration of non linear time and entangled experience. The work was subsequently reconfigured for a seven screen presentation at Sónar Festival, Barcelona, in 2025.

The most recent iteration, presented at MU Art House, Eindhoven, expanded the performance into participatory space. Here, slime functioned as a tactile quantum material, inviting collective play and sensory engagement, while Heaney’s body operated as sculptural forms within a shared field of perception. Through these shifting embodiments, Eat My Multiverse continues to develop as a living performance ecology that invites audiences to encounter themselves as plural, relational and dynamically entangled.

Heaney also developed an 2 channel installation version of the work called Nibble My Multiverse, 2025.
